5 ideal weekend getaways for Valentines

It’s the same story every year. Valentine’s approaching and if you’re in a relationship, chances are that you will arrange a romantic gesture in one way or the other. But why don’t you escape all the fuss with a weekend getaway to one of these stunning European cities?

Florence

Italy is simply impossible to avoid when it comes to romantic holidays - and why should you? This country is bursting with charming villages and cities just waiting for you to explore in the name of love. While the eternal city of Rome and the fashion capital of Milan are both beautiful, there’s something different about Florence. A melancholy wrapped in a southern European charm, which will instantly make you fall in love, if you’re not already.

Riga

The historical capital of Latvia in Eastern Europe is a hidden gem. In recent year, it has opened up as a tourist destination, but there’s still a lot to discover. The food culture for example. Latvians eat a lot of delicious fish and vegetables, and the biggest food market in Europe is actually located in Riga. Why not combine your weekend getaway in Riga with a trip to the country’s fashionable coast town of Jurmala? or with a quick stop-over in Stockholm? Last-mentioned only takes 1 hour by plane.

Vienna

The grandiose capital of Vienna is like a big cup of hot chocolate with Chantilly creme on top. It’s impressive, seductive and quiet old-fashioned. And there’s no better place to stay if you’re in love. The old streets in the city center will pamper you with great shopping and the historical hotels and restaurants shows you where fine dining began (well, at least a part of it). The beauty of Vienna is mesmerizing and one should definitely take time to explore the cultural treasures that literally lies beneath your feet. Don’t forget to stop for a piece of traditional Sacher Tort at Sacher Hotel.

Bruges

Belgium is a true foodie destination pampering visitors will traditional beer breweries, genuine chocolate factories and seducing French fries on every corner, but there’s more to it. Bruges, a historical city located one hour from Brussels, is pure paradise if you’re looking to have a relaxing weekend in some of the most charming settings Europe has to offer. Pancake houses with timber framing, impressive Gothic churches and cosy outdoor cafés sums it up, but some even refer to Bruges as ‘The Venice of the North’. Why? You can sail in the channels running through the city and almost get the same feeling. Go!

Ljubljana

An often forgotten destination is the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. Hence, this city is the ideal place to spend a holiday away from the crowds! Its fairytale-ish charm will take your breath away and you’ll most probably be stunned about how affordable everything is. Oh, and Slovenian delicacies like honey, salt and prosciutto (just as good as in Italy!) are so underestimated. Ljubljana has easy access to both skiing and swimming, and if you climb to the top of the city’s castle, you’ll notice that it’s completely surrounded by breathtaking mountains.
