Checking in: Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel in Grünewald (Berlin)

If you’re heading to Berlin, but would like to stay in somewhat calmer surroundings, I can only recommend spending a couple of nights at the historical Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel in idyllic Grünewald, just half an hour’s drive from the city center.

Decadence of past times

Berlin is great (I’ve been living here for 6 months), but I’m also the first one to say that it’s absolutely necessary to get out of the city from time to time. At least if you, like me, value nature, peace and serenity. Those are just some of the things you’ll find at the renowned Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel, which has welcomed nobility, jet setters and celebrities for nine decades.

The hotel can be reached within one hour from the center of Berlin and half an hour if you’re arriving by car, yet it feels like you’re in a completely different world. Even though the property has changed owners (and management) quite a few times over the past years, you’ll immediately feel at home when entering the glistening lobby. It reminds you of a past era and a decadence that simply doesn’t come from one day to another. This schlosshotel might only be a little more than 100 years old, but it certainly has a patina. And it only adds to the atmosphere that starlets such as Josephine Baker and Romy Schneider hung out here - and let’s not forget the Rolling Stones, who came here in the 1970’s.

Fashion, style and service

Whether you’re into fashion or not, the story of Karl Lagerfeld designing all the interior in 1994 (and the current design by Patrick Hellmann) is intriguing once you’re there. It goes well together, cause glamour, decadence and fashion have always been the best of friends. One will find 43 stylishly decorated rooms and 10 suites with views of the garden, and despite the fact that we checked into a regular double room in the newer part of the hotel, nothing was missing. My favorite part? The calm surroundings, garden view and King Size bed in which I slept like a baby (or should I say princess?)

Part of the interior at Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel

There are many five star hotels with stunning interior around the world today, but not all of them offer a service that matches. Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel stands out from the masses by treating each and every customer like royalty. Not in a shallow and less flattering way, but in a way that makes you feel special, and isn’t that part of the deal when you’re booking a stay in a 5 star hotel? I believe it is. The Staff, in particular the Front Office Agent, is worth mentioning here, cause he made all the difference. With more than 20 years at Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel, he knows a thing (or many!) about the guests who have come and gone for the past decades - and he certainly knows the hotel from inside out. Whether you’ll meet him there or not, chances are, you’ll understand what I’m talking about when entering the lobby.

The gastronomical part of the hotel is another thing worth exploring. The restaurant takes you back to culinary excellence, but also the authentic Berlin lifestyle of the Golden Twenties. A time I would do anything to experience! Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel gives you a taste of it and that’s what’s making it so special. Make sure to reserve a table in advance, especially in weekends.
