Exploring the Latvian coast: Our top 4

You simply can’t visit Latvia without taking a trip along the 500 km coast. And while you’re at it - here’s what you should see and do:

In my opinion, Latvia is a slightly overlooked country. You understand this when exploring the beautiful nature, the food scene and not least the rich culture, which has hidden away for so many years, when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. Luckily, all this ended in 1990 when Latvia restored its independence, and today, the country welcomes tourist from all over the world. During my four days here, I also learned that Latvian people are very proud of their country and customs. So I decided to rent a car and explore a bit more of all this.

1. Find serenity at Cape Kolka

The place where the open coast along the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga is called ‘Cape Kolka’. Tourists flock here to get a glimpse of the crashing waves, which has always been a dangerous passage for sailors. The cape is a truly beautiful place in all its natural glory and one begin to understands the Latvian culture and soul when being here. In summer it’s paradise for surfer’s, and the small town of Kolka is located just nearby. The trademark of Cape Kolka, the red lighthouse, was built in 1884.

2. Enjoy the sandy beaches of Jūrmala

Jūrmala is a popular resort town located on the coast of Latvia and it’s 33 km stretch of white-sand-beach is simply breathtaking. While the city itself is nothing special, there’s a large spa hotel located here, which invites for a day of self-indulgence. The beaches here are perfect for a picnic and a swim in the sea (but remember it can be quite cold, even during summer!)

3. Have lunch at 36. Line Restaurant

The best food I had during my entire stay in Latvia was at this gem of a stylish beach restaurant located in Jūrmala. Tucked away between a wide sandy beach and a wooden area, 36. Line offers gourmet food at quite reasonable prices. Enjoy freshly caught seafood or a Latvian delicacy and a glass of chilled wine while enjoying the stunning views to the ocean. A definite must-try - even if you’re staying in Riga, which is half an hour’s drive from here.

4. Indulge in spa & wellness at Baltic Beach Hotel

Yes, I have already published a review of this hotel, but it still deserves a mention on this list. While there are many other areas in Latvia - and in this case along the coast - that’s begging to be explored, Baltic Beach Hotel is a nice break, which reminds you to slow down. Enjoy a day spa experience here or simply book an appointment for a treatment.
