Whether you’re going on a spa holiday for a long weekend, spending some nice quality time with your family or going on a business trip for a couple of days, it’s always nice to have a little tan! Save your skin from the damaging UV radiation and keep a professional and easy-to-use tanning product within reach – I’ll give you some inside information on the history of tanning – and show you my top 3 favorite products – right here:
The story of ‘sunkissed’
Enjoying the sun has been a favorite pastime for people of all ages throughout many, many years. However, it was not until the 1920’s (the so-called ‘flapper age’) when fashion icon Coco Chanel returned to Paris from a vacation in the south of France with a tan (!) that it became widely popular amongst women! Quickly sun therapy became popular as well and was used to treat everything from fatigue to head ache. In the 1930’s Hollywood producers started to make color movies, which resulted in a demand for fresh-faced and rosy-cheeked actors. During the 1940’s and 1950’s the California dream started to emerge – it was a sign of wealth and power to have a sun tan! And the rest is history. Fortunately we have come a long way since the beginning, and today we have a much healthier view on sun-tanning than ever before. It might look pretty and healthy with a tan, but one should avoid too much sunbathing and with it the damaging UV radiation, since it obviously leads to skin cancer and wrinkles. So what does one do? The answer would be applying a tanning product at home – or have someone professional doing it in a spray tan clinic.
Personally, I’ve been testing hundreds of tanning products throughout my previous job as a beauty editor and blogger, and I must say I’ve found some pretty good ones! I prefer spending a little more on a quality product that lasts for several days instead of a cheaper version that fades quickly and gives me the less flattering zebra-look! Today, I have a handful of trusted tan products, which I use on a regular basis – and especially before going on business trips and weekend get-aways. It gives that healthy, sun-kissed look that I love – and I’m sure it reflects on other people when I’m super comfortable in my own skin! My current favorites are:
Currently UK’s leading self-tanning expert with more than 12 years of experience in the business. James Read is a popular name amongst A-list celebrities and you’ll find him operating personally in his chic London-based tanning suite. My personal favorite product from his distinguished white/gold striped collection is the ‘Bronzing Spray Instant’, which is a lightweight mist that delivers a perfect and even tan for up to 5 days. It’s also infused with a conditioning formula of Aloe Vera. Another great product (which I haven’t seen anywhere before) is the ‘Sleep Mask Tan’. It combines skin beautifying ingredients such as Aloe Vera and cucumber and a hint of self-tan, for which reason you’ll wake up in the morning with a pretty glow in your face.
Founded in 1994 Jane Iredale has experienced the development of the beauty industry up close, but she never left the original idea of the brand; natural makeup with skin benefits. More recently the company have launched ‘Tantasia’ – a self-tanner and bronzer with moisturizing ingredients. The color is natural, but if you’re quite fair skinned like me, make sure you don’t overdo it the first couple of times! The color develops over a 24 hour period, but one should apply it for 2-3 days in a row to experience the full effect. I’m not so fond of the smell though – it’s supposed to be neutral, but to me it has kind of a metallic smell. However, this stuff works!
This popular tan-brand was introduced to the world in 2007, but it wasn’t until 2011, where beauty giant Sephora launched it as their main tanning-brand, that Vita Liberata became world-famous. Today new tanning salons are popping up everywhere and the collections range from sun-makeup to gradual tans, skincare and actual tanning products. My personal favorite is the ‘Tinted Self Tanning Mousse’, which is a lightweight, fast drying mousse that ensures an even, beautiful golden color. The mousse is tinted, so that you can easily see where you have applied it.
If you’re looking for a tanning-product that lasts for longer time you should try out the ‘Phenomenal’-range, which lasts for 2-3 weeks (that’s 4 times longer than an average tanning-product!)
