Admiral Hotel, Copenhagen: 200 years of maritime history

When entering the lobby of the four star Admiral Hotel you can almost sense it; the 200 years of dramatic history incorporated in the walls, in the old wooden rafters. It’s a piece of Danish history combined with modern luxuries such as comfort - and a really good breakfast! Come join us for a night at the ideally located Admiral Hotel in the heart of Copenhagen.

A proud symbol of the past

The hotel itself carries a little less than 40 years of history, but the old storehouse has a much more dramatic story to tell. It all began more than 200 years ago when the building was used for storage of corn. Later on (in 1801), the Battle of Copenhagen took place just outside the windows of the building, in which many wounded soldiers were seeking cover from the hail of bullets. Today, Admiral Hotel stands as a proud symbol of a wealthy past, where the Danish navy experienced absolute power and prestige.

Our experience at the hotel began with a light lunch at the bar followed by a quick check-in to what would appear to be one of the best rooms of the hotel. The Senior Suite was located on the top floor with splendid views to the waterfront and the Royal Danish Opera. A funny detail is the maritime interior and decorations adorning all the rooms - from the lobby to the rooms and the restaurant. It’s a tasteful reminder of past glory - and a unique location in the city of course.

The Senior Suite

Spacious suites and waterfront views

The Senior Suites are very spacious (35 m2) and very suitable for families, honeymooners or even business people in need of private space for meetings. They’re  all divided into two floors - the first one being a wardrobe with space for jackets, shoes and luggage. When you mount the stairs, a whole different world appears: a luxurious suite with sea view, classy furniture and wooden rafters in the ceiling. When you reach this point, it’s time to get your feet up and enjoy one of the finest hotel views Copenhagen has to offer!

Cheers!

The ocean view from the top floor

If the Senior Suite is too much to handle for a short stay in the city, the Twin Rooms and regular Double Rooms are also very cosy. Free wifi, coffee & tea facilities, video-on-demand and a minibar are common facilities in all rooms.

Nordic with a twist

Hungry guests are highly recommended to visit the SALT Bar & Restaurant located on the ground floor of the hotel. Even if you’re not staying here, SALT is worth a visit! The kitchen is a reinterpretation of the classic Parisian brasserie, and the food is both innovative and down-to-earth. It’s best described as ‘modern Danish with a twist’ - fresh ingredients and modern techniques breed an interesting yet very grounded gourmet experience - and the view to the waterfront and the Opera House is just fabulous. During the night it’s even more magical when all the lights and the historical rooms frames an unforgettable experience. In summer, guests can enjoy both breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks on the outside terrace.

Speaking of breakfast. I have rarely seen so many colors on my plate. The large buffet offers everything from traditional English breakfast, cold cuts and local delicacies to fresh fruit, Danish pastry and bread in all shapes and sizes. The weekends are usually quite fully booked, so if you’re looking to have a nice and quiet breakfast, this might not be the right place. The breakfast buffet is only available for staying guests and the price is 145 DKK (20€) per person.

A colorful breakfast

Admiral Hotel covers a wide field and is therefore an excellent choice for both families, business people and couples looking for a romantic city break. The location of the hotel doesn’t get much better (2 minutes from Amalienborg Castle and Nyhavn) and a short boat ride from the Royal Danish Opera, which is definitely also worth a visit. It’s always a pleasure visiting this historical hotel, in which you can feel the presence of history already upon arrival.
